WISP of the YearMiaNet

The WISP of the Year Award is presented to License-Exempt Wireless Internet Service Provider. This award is for distinguished service to the deployment, viability, advancement and pursuit of industry objectives and those objectives of PART-15.ORG. The License-Exempt Wireless Internet Service Provider of the Year Award is presented to a WISP who has demonstrated:

  • Implements a well designed wireless network in accordance with industry standards.

  • Continually adheres to all applicable FCC rules and regulations

  • Good Neighbor Interference Policy

  • Demonstrated their ability to adapt to changing technology

Chairman's Comments - I was very glad to see Jeremy "Jer" receive the award for WISP of the Year. I've personally known him for a little over four years as his WISP is not very far from mine. Jer is the type of WISP many others try to follow or mimic. He has a very successful web hosting, dialup, hardwired business so when he added License Exempt Wireless to his arsenal of broadband and internet solutions I wasn't surprised. With the addition of Wireless not only has his market grown, but he provides the much needed services to another chuck of rural land that the big guys just keep forgetting about. He is very talkative and helpful on the WISP discussion lists to aid other WISPs in deploying wireless and is involved with various other WISP assistance programs such as providing the much needed training at WISPCONs. "Way to Go Jer, keep up the good work".

Manufacturer of the YearAlvarion AND smartBridges

The Manufacturer of the Year Award is awarded for outstanding contributions to design, practice, techniques, or theory, as evidences by publications, patents or equipment design in wireless control systems engineering, wireless sciences or technology. The Wireless Manufacturer of the Year Award is presented to a hardware or software manufacturers who has demonstrated:

  • An exceptional technical support program

  • An enrichment to the WISP community through innovation of new technologies

  • Accepts the encouragement of the WISP community for product enhancement

  • Maintains exceptional supply channels to ensure

Chairman's Comments - WOW, this is a first - a tie. I'm proud to announce that both Alvarion and smartBridges have won the Manufacturer of the Year award.  I'll start with Alvarion because I've know them longer.

Alvarion always seems to be right on top of the WISP needs and responds almost as fast as the WISP's can request new features and technology.  It's usually only a matter of a month or two and Alvarion is not only right on top of the new technology but is also shipping the new products. Alvarion's keen ability to be ahead of the WISP industry and offer WISPs the newest, hottest solutions with excellent technical support and strong customer service has set them far ahead of the rest of the WISP industry. Although being one of the Pioneers of the industry, Alvarion has stayed on top of the demands and technologies throughout the years without ever slowing the forward momentum. Truly an excellent company and their aggressiveness in the WISP industry is held in the highest esteem.

smartBridges - Here come the new kids on the block and boy are they blasting their way to becoming one of the largest 802.11b manufacturers in the industry. In the less than a two year period I've known about them they have managed to catch a very large market share of the 802.11b market. I've dealt with them on a individual basis since the beginning when they had the foresight to research the WISP industry before finalizing their product lines for production. It was impressive to see the enthusiasm they had in wanting to hear what the WISPs needed in a wireless product and then I watched them run back to the plant and implement almost everything the WISPs told them they needed. smartBridges is constantly releasing new product lines, is very active in providing support to their customers, has an excellent customer relations department and is attuned to the cost, reliability, and availability of their products. Having watched them grow over the past two years, this company is definitely one to keep your eye on.

Chairman's Comments - Patrick Leary  - Patrick's personal commitment to the WISP is unsurpassed. It is not hard to see why his official Alvarion title is Evangelist.  Many times over the years, and at his own expense and "after-duty" hours Patrick has spoken on behalf of the WISP at the FCC, constantly posts helpful answers to questions on the many discussion lists he monitors, frequents his customer base, and provides meaningful training sessions at the various industry conferences he attendees throughout the year.  In just the same manner as the company he works for, Patrick is also on top of the technologies that the WISPs want and need. He is seldom without a sound, technical answer. I am very enthusiastic and pleased to present Patrick with the Advocate of the Year award. Patrick, I would like to also take this opportunity to personally thank you for all the help you have provided to the hundreds and now thousands of WISPs across the globe.
